Hidden Histories
My third year degree project examined the island of Anglesey, as an island it has a separate identity from the rest of Wales. My body of work reflects my passion for landscape photography and the history of a place. By understanding the history of the land, it informs my approach to making the images that you see today. My images of Anglesey show the buildings of the island’s industrial, maritime, and religious past set still like aging monuments in every changing backdrop.
There are elements that make up a scene from buildings, nature, geology, weather, and the time of day can also define the light on the landscape which alters the tone and perspective of a landscape image. Each place has its own unique arrangement of these elements which can be further altered by human interaction and time.
Researching a place before my visit helps me understand its history and significance to the island and is my way of connecting with these places. When I feel an affinity with each site, I can compose the picture and place the structure within its context. To show its beauty and significance to the island. Anglesey has a history spanning a millennium from prehistoric shamans, Druids, early Christian saints, and has a rich industrial heritage. The human imprint is diverse embracing hut circles, standing stones, medieval churches, small Victorian Industries, lighthouses, and land management in the form of managed forest and animals grazing enclosures. My decision to photograph in panoramic format is to place these historical structures within the context of the island’s fabric My work also questions the notion of built structures within a beautiful landscape.
